Four of these items are letters written by Mercer to his newphew, Theodore S. Garnett, as Mercer travelled throughout Europe in the interest of the abolition of the slave trade. One item is a letter from Mercer to his niece, Eliza L. Garnett, while he was employed as a bank cashier. The earliest letter in this collection is from James Mercer Garnett (1770-1843), legislator, agriculturist, and educator, to his wife, Mary Eleanor Dick Mercer. Included is a R.M.T. Hunter letter pertaining to James Mercer Garnett, the philologist born in 1840.
